Introducing B. A. Raven’s Debut Novel ‘Primal Instincts’
CAN YOU TELL US WHAT YOUR BOOK IS ABOUT?
No one knows how it started. Domestic animals began to go wild, reverting to their primal states and lashing out at their owners. Felicia Owens, CDC scientist in Los Angeles, was attacked out of the blue by her cat. Now, Felicia is fighting bouts of irritability, anger, and outright primal rage. When others begin acting in a similar way, Felicia realizes that she needs to figure out what’s going on and how to cure it before it’s too late. Maybe it already is.
HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE IDEA FOR ‘PRIMAL INSTINCTS’?
It was actually an idea that my mom and I both came up with. I was originally trying to come up with something for a writing contest, when my cat came into the room. My mom looked at me and said “What would happen if pets suddenly started going savage?” Things just kind of started flowing from there.
WHAT SETS YOUR BOOK APART FROM THE COMPETITION?
I consider my novel to fall within the thriller and murder mystery genres, but it is not at all like a lot of the murder mystery novels that you see on the shelves. Firstly, my characters come from all walks of life and are of different nationalities. Secondly, the plot is full of twists and turns: you may think you know what is going to happen, but then it goes in a completely different direction. Thirdly – without giving too much away – the fact that people’s domestic animals go wild and attack their owners, who get an unknown disease as a result, turns this story into an apocalyptic novel also, without all of the original apocalyptic measures. This is what, in my opinion, makes a real difference compared to other books of similar genres I’ve read.

I am 26 years old and just recently debuted my first novel. When I am not working on my novel, I help to take care of my younger siblings and our 3 bulldogs. In my spare time, I enjoy diamond painting and learning other languages.
