Introducing ‘Cerwin’s Orphans’ – Scott Ferry’s Debut Novel

CAN YOU TELL US WHAT YOUR BOOK IS ABOUT?
‘Cerwin’s Orphans’ is the first in a series of five books, the second of which is currently being written.
A dark threat has arisen in the east, overwhelming the Greenlands. Torbin Paleskin strives to coordinate a defence at The Titan Gate but the disparate nature of The Free Territories makes this arduous in the extreme. At the same time Candor Blackheart must try to stand fast and protect the twin cities, sacrificing everything he cherished.
Jonoh Shipwright has to face a disturbing truth and step into manhood before his time, while his closest friend Garic Carpenter struggles with a revelation.
Marisa Longspear has to rise to a challenge and put her distrust of authority behind her, stepping into the great northern wastelands. In the Kingdom of Darmat, Advocate Sorkin must risk everything, knowing discovery will cost his life.
Meanwhile Shadowmaster Cerwin tries to walk the line in between, while The Orphans gather for the final confrontation.
HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE STORY AND WHAT MAKES IT UNIQUE?
I started this process about 11 years ago when I read a novel by a renowned fantasy fiction author, one who has had awards named after him. I said to my best friend and my main confidant with regards to my writing, how poor I thought it was and that I could do better. His reponse was go on then, so here we are. We discussed in detail the things that we did not care for in Fantasy fiction, mainly the over use of description and analogy that does not drive the narrative or serve the story. Therefore I have deliberately reined it in and only use it where I feel it serves a useful purpose.
I also deliberately write in ten page chapters, short and sharp, enough to engage the reader but also keep them guessing. It is written in tight bursts, switching from narrative character to narrative character, sometimes with two or more narrative characters together, switching to their individual POVs. It is deliberately fast paced and it reads as such.
CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF?
I have been writing for eleven years and am convinced that I have written something very different. I work for a company that provides rehabilative equipment to enable people to return home, sometimes in an end of life context. I enjoy doing something that actually makes a positive contribution to society but I would like to become a full time author, it is the only meaningful skill I possess.
My passions lie with sports: Cricket, Rugby and Boxing. I also have an enduring love for the arts: literature, film, television and painting.
